Advanced Handheld Automotive Diagnostics for VW and Audi
Beginning in the 1980s new vehicles began to be wired with a variety of computerized diagnostic systems designed to improve efficiencies, simplify troubleshooting and minimize the need for repairs. These systems produce indicators known as diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) internally, usually indicating something out of the ordinary by illuminating the “check engine”/malfunction indicator light (MIL) on the dashboard of your car. In the 1990s these systems, codes and the hardware connectors used to access them were standardized in North America as OBD (onboard diagnostics) and later OBD-II. Europe uses the equivalent EOBD, but Volkswagen and Audi vehicles also use another diagnostic standard system, VAG. Unofficially this acronym can be taken to stand for “Volkswagen Audi Group.”

The Roadi RDT55 VW/AUDI Code Scanner is specially designed to work with most Volkswagen and Audis sold worldwide of 1990 or newer models. If a VW/AUDI has a 16 pin OBD-II style Data Link Connector (DTC), the scanner tool will certainly work. If it has an old-style 2×2 Data Link Connector (DTC), then it depends on whether there are 4 or 3 wires connecting to the pins. If there are 4 wires, each connecting a pin, then it will work. If there are only 3 wires leaving one pin disconnected then it will not work. For VW/AUDI with old-style 2×2 Data Link Connector (DTC), you need to have a 2×2 cabling adapter which is not included in this product package. Once a viable configuration is found, to use while the engine is off simply plug the RDT55 code reader cable connector into the corresponding data port in your vehicle, usually located near the dashboard or gearshift. Then switch the ignition on and scroll to the right menu option users can gain access to generic and vehicle specific VAG and OBD-II codes related primarily to the engine, transmission, airbag and ABS systems that trigger MIL events. Definitions for the DTCs will be displayed on-screen and can be found in your manual or via the CD definitions lists in on the CD included. The RDT55 reads trouble codes for most Volkswagen’s 78 systems, views live engine data and supports all AW and VW OBD2/EOBD protocols, including the newly released controller area network (CAN) protocol, allowing users to keep up with the latest development in automotive diagnostic scanning. Additional features include a USB cable for updating the RDT55s definitions list and software and a nylon carrying case. The RDT55 can view live engine data, providing the ability to troubleshoot issues more thoroughly by viewing the data that causes DTCs to be generated.

Saved me a ‘diagnostic fee’ at the dealer.

I can’t say enough positive things about this device. If you own a modern Volkswagen or Audi, many of the codes and engine diagnostic data packets can only be read by a device such as this, or through a system called VAG COM. A VAG COM reader would produce far more detailed information, but is more expensive than this device. This is an excellent alternative for those like me who feel comfortable doing minor maintenance and repair on their car, but feel most comfortable taking more difficult repairs to the dealer or mechanic.

As many dealerships, such as the ones near by me, CHARGE a diagnostic fee just to read codes, this can save you money in the long run. In my particular case I as able to determine that I had a bad battery, figure out which chambers were misfiring and replace the coilpacks on them, and read the upper and lower range of voltage on an oxygen sensor that appeared to be defective.

Build quality is good, and using the device is very simple. It also comes with a decent tote bag. The device can be updated through use of a USB cable, but I haven’t had the need to attempt this yet.

Great Tool!

Great product. Easy to use with nice clear messages. I brought it to use with my 2004 Audi S4 because my engine MIL indicator was on. It plugged in and worked first go without a problem. Gave me the codes that were causing the issue and allowed me to clear the codes. I haven’t dropped it to put it to the test but it looks fairly sturdy as well. Comes in a handy soft zip up carry case. All in all very happy with my purchase.

good tool for VAG cars but with some issues

The Roadi RDT55 OBD2 scanner works well with my ’03 VW showing the VAG codes for various controlled systems as well as OBD2 codes. However, there are some issues. The box says that it has a battery backup, but mine didn’t. There is a battery compartment on the unit, but there are no terminals to connect a battery (note that the manual and most product descriptions don’t mention using a battery, so I guess this is just an error on the box). The manual has many errors and typos, but the unit is easy to use. Also, the box says you can update the software on the unit from the web using either a USB or serial connection (the included “update” cable has both connections), but in truth, you need both ports for updates (the unit gets its power from the USB port, but it uses the serial port to transfer the software). With most laptops lacking a serial port, you’ll need a USB to serial port cable and software for it to update the unit.

Overall, this is a good tool for VAG cars.

Great engineering. Great performance.

We have used the Thule T-2 rack for 3 years and found it to be a great product. Previously, we have used 4 other racks but never felt that they securely supported our bikes. I needed a top quality rack that would hold my Gary Fisher mtb with 29″ wheels. This was the only platform rack that could do this and it does it superbly! I use the Thule Snug-Tite locking pin to secure the rack to the hitch. It, too, works great as do the bike locks. This setup ensures that nothing rattles, rubs or comes loose while driving. Whenever we load and unload the bikes in a public lot we get stares and comments as to how fast and easily we do so. Because of the superior engineering I know that this is the last bike rack I will ever buy.

Can’t say enough good things about this bike rack. It is easy to install, easy to operate and fits our Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon like a glove. It is a little tight getting the tailgate open with the rack in the full down position but I plan to get a drop hitch 2″ extender and it will be perfect. My wife like this rack because it allows her to get her bike on and off without any assistance due to not having to lift the bike high in the air to mount. Bike stay secure and travel well even on slightly offroad conditions. Extremely happy with this purchase and will use this bike rack for many years!

Well made, security features are a nice touch

In the market for a good platform rack, I narrowed my choices down to the Thule 916XTR T2, the Yakima Hold-Up, or the Kuat NV. I didn’t want to spend more than $400, so the Kuat was out (plus it seemed a little quirky.) I liked the Yakima Hold-Up (used my cousin’s for a few rides) but two things bothered me about it. 1 – the lock cable was separate from the actual rack, and 2 – sometimes we would have issues with pedals hitting or seats and handlebars coming together. The Thule 916XTR T2 had solutions for both of those issues: each lock arm had a built-in locking frame cable for each bike, and the rails that the bikes would ride on were adjustable both side-to-side and fore-aft, allowing me to position each rail with as much spacing as I needed.

Assembly took all but 30 minutes, and once I had it on the Toyota Highlander I began to see the features of the unit more clearly – for example, the hinge – it’s beefy, using two pivot points instead of one, allowing for little if any side-to-side wiggle or wobble. The individual frame cables are a nice touch – not to mention that the included 3-lock set all use a single key for convenience (though I needed 5 – see “Weaknesses”). I don’t know about you, but having a total of 5 locks seems to be more of a theft deterrent compared to the single separate cable lock that the Yakima comes with.

The hook arm that grabs onto your front wheel is easy to use and ratchets down tight. The rear ratcheting straps are also easy to use, and is versatile thanks to the sliding rear wheel mount. Loading up two full-suspension bikes is very easy and quick. Oh, and about spacing: the lower rack “legs” that the bikes are held to can be adjusted fore/aft to vary the space between the vehicle and each individual bike. I don’t have to worry about my pedals hitting the pedals on my brother’s bike anymore, because I was able to adjust the spacing correctly for clearance.

Some people complain that the rack is heavy, but for me a good bike rack SHOULD have some weight to it; If I’m loading almost $10,000 of bikes onto it, I would rather load that investment onto something that feels tough and sturdy. I am not a weightlifter, but I have no trouble removing and attaching the rack to my SUV for weekend rides. One thing to be aware of though: There are 5 places to have cylinder locks (two for the locking frame cables, two for the hook arms themselves, and one for the STL hitch bolt); however Thule only gives you 3 matching locks included with the 916 XTR T2. Thule sells matching lock sets in packs of 4, 6, or 8 – and I wanted the entire setup to have matching locks, so I had to spend another $50 for the 6-lock set (since they don’t make a 5-lock set). This is the only reason why I did not give the 916 XTR T2 5 stars.

Aside from that, I’m very happy that I chose Thule’s 916XTR T2 platform carrier. The ratcheting arms and rear wheel straps make loading up my bike quick and easy. Being able to adjust the spacing between the bikes is a big plus as well. The built-in cable locks for each bike and as the availability of 5 matching locks adds to the theft deterrence. It barely moves on the freeway at 85mph and thanks to the threaded hitch bolt the rack stays put when driving over bumpy roads and railroad tracks. Great platform rack, good choice.

Overall what I would expect from an Exide battery. They have been making reliable OEM replacement batteries for a long time and this one is NO exception at all.

Compact and powerful

I checked the reviews before buying and found this battery was the best bang for the buck. It’s also smaller and lighter than the OE battery it replaced. Since it’s a sealed unit, there’s no more leaking acid to corroded and ruin under-hood components, battery trays, terminal ends, and expensive wire harnesses. Sometimes my Chevy Tahoe sits for a week at a time, but this battery always has plenty of power to turn over and start the truck’s big V-8.
I highly recommend the Exide Orbital battery.

Does not fit a Saturn SL1, due to top posts.

Amazon’s checker here said this would fit a Saturn SL1. I should have checked the old battery — some cars have a large securing plate that goes on the top of the battery, and can only accept side-posted batteries.

Looks like a great battery. Note: batteries are hazardous materials, and Amazon cannot accept returns for them.
